Global Leadership and Regional Governance Framework

Purpose

The Women in STEM Network is a global organisation dedicated to supporting, connecting, developing, and celebrating women working across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and related disciplines.

As the organisation continues to expand internationally, a regional leadership structure has been established to ensure members receive meaningful local support while remaining connected to a strong global community.

This framework outlines the leadership structure, responsibilities, governance arrangements, and expectations for all senior leaders within the Women in STEM Network.

Leadership Structure

The Women in STEM Network operates through a global leadership model consisting of:

Founder & Chair

The Founder & Chair provides the long term vision, governance oversight, strategic direction, and external representation of the Women in STEM Network.

Key responsibilities include:

• Defining the long term strategy and mission.

• Supporting the CEO and leadership team.

• Developing senior stakeholder relationships.

• Building major partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.

• Representing the organisation externally.

• Chairing governance and strategic discussions.

• Supporting Regional Advisory Boards.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The CEO is responsible for the day to day leadership and management of the Women in STEM Network.

The CEO works closely with the Founder and Regional CEOs to deliver organisational objectives and ensure the successful operation of all programmes, events, partnerships, and member services.

Key responsibilities include:

Organisational Leadership

• Lead the day to day operation of the Women in STEM Network.

• Deliver the strategic objectives agreed with the Founder.

• Ensure organisational activities align with the mission and values of the organisation.

• Monitor organisational performance and identify opportunities for growth.

Leadership of Regional Directors

• Recruit, support, and manage Regional Directors.

• Hold regular leadership meetings.

• Support regional growth and development.

• Ensure consistency of member experience globally.

• Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing between regions.

• Monitor regional performance and engagement.

Membership Experience

• Oversee member recruitment, engagement, and retention.

• Ensure members receive value through networking, mentoring, events, resources, and opportunities.

• Monitor member satisfaction and participation.

Volunteer Leadership

• Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and support of volunteers.

• Ensure volunteer teams are effectively managed.

• Foster a positive and collaborative volunteer culture.

Events and Programmes

• Oversee all Women in STEM Network events and programmes.

This includes:

• Spotlight Events

• Soft Skills Events

• Subject Overview Events

• Networking Events

• Special Programmes

• Annual Conference Activities

The CEO is responsible for ensuring all events are delivered professionally and provide value to members.

Communications and Marketing

• Oversee newsletters and member communications.

• Oversee social media activity and content strategy.

• Support marketing campaigns that increase visibility, membership, sponsorship, and engagement.

• Ensure consistent branding and messaging.

Partnerships and Sponsorship

• Develop and maintain organisational partnerships.

• Support sponsorship acquisition and retention.

• Work with Regional Directors to identify and secure opportunities.

Annual Conference

• Lead the operational delivery of the annual Women in STEM Network conference.

• Coordinate speaker recruitment, sponsorship activity, marketing, logistics, and delegate experience.

Reporting and Governance

• Provide regular updates to the Founder.

• Monitor organisational metrics including membership, engagement, partnerships, sponsorships, events, and finances.

• Ensure policies and governance requirements are followed.

Regional Director Structure

Regional Directors are responsible for leading the Women in STEM Network within their assigned geographical region.

Regional Directors form part of the Global Leadership Team and report directly to the CEO.

They are responsible for regional growth, partnerships, sponsorships, stakeholder engagement, local community development, and regional representation.

Regional Structure

United Kingdom

Responsible for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Europe

Responsible for all European countries excluding the United Kingdom.

North America

Responsible for the United States and Canada.

Latin America

Responsible for Central America, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Israel

Responsible for all activities within Israel.

Given Israel's significant contribution to global science, technology, engineering, medicine, biotechnology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, Israel operates as a dedicated region within the Women in STEM Network.

Arab Region

Responsible for Arab League countries across the Gulf, Levant, and North Africa.

This includes countries such as:

• Saudi Arabia

• United Arab Emirates

• Qatar

• Bahrain

• Kuwait

• Oman

• Jordan

• Egypt

• Morocco

• Tunisia

• Algeria

• Iraq

• Lebanon

and other Arab-speaking nations.

South Asia

Responsible for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and neighbouring countries.

East Asia

Responsible for Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and neighbouring countries.

Australia and New Zealand

Responsible for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific territories.

Africa

Responsible for all African countries and territories.

The Women in STEM Network reserves the right to create, merge, split, or redefine regions as the organisation grows.

Responsibilities of Regional Directors

Membership Growth

• Increase membership within the region.

• Promote the Women in STEM Network through universities, employers, research organisations, and professional bodies.

• Support member recruitment and retention.

Partnership Development

• Develop relationships with universities and educational institutions.

• Build partnerships with employers and STEM organisations.

• Identify opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Sponsorship Development

• Identify potential sponsors.

• Build relationships with regional stakeholders.

• Introduce sponsorship opportunities to the CEO and Founder.

• Support sponsorship acquisition and retention.

Local Hub Development

• Establish and support local networking hubs.

• Recruit and support Hub Leaders.

• Encourage local networking and engagement activities.

Corporate Engagement

Regional Directors should actively engage with STEM employers and organisations.

Potential activities include:

• Employer visits.

• Industry networking events.

• Career insight sessions.

• Workplace tours.

• Mentoring opportunities.

• Graduate recruitment initiatives.

• Sponsored networking events.

Community Engagement

• Support regional communication channels.

• Encourage collaboration among members.

• Support local WhatsApp groups where appropriate.

• Identify regional opportunities and challenges.

Events

• Promote and support Women in STEM Network events.

• Recruit speakers from the region.

• Support local networking activities.

• Contribute to annual conference planning and delivery.

Strategic Leadership

• Participate in Global Leadership Team meetings.

• Share regional updates and insights.

• Contribute to organisational planning and growth.

Regional Advisory Boards

Each region will establish its own Regional Advisory Board.

Regional Advisory Boards provide strategic advice, regional expertise, introductions, advocacy, and support for the growth of the Women in STEM Network.

Regional Advisory Boards may include leaders from:

• Industry

• Academia

• Government

• Healthcare

• Research

• Entrepreneurship

• Investment

• Professional bodies

• Innovation organisations

Regional Advisory Board Meetings

Each Regional Advisory Board will meet three times per year.

Attendance is expected from:

• Founder & Chair

• Chief Executive Officer

• Regional Directors

• Regional Advisory Board Members

The purpose of these meetings is to:

• Review regional progress.

• Identify opportunities and challenges.

• Discuss partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.

• Support strategic decision making.

• Strengthen stakeholder relationships.

• Align regional plans with the global strategy of the Women in STEM Network.

Local Hubs

Local hubs provide opportunities for members to connect in person and build professional networks within their local area.

Local hubs may organise:

• Networking meetings.

• Speaker events.

• Employer visits.

• University visits.

• Career development activities.

• Mentoring initiatives.

• Community engagement activities.

Regional Directors are responsible for supporting the development and success of local hubs within their region.

Global Leadership Meetings

The Global Leadership Team will meet quarterly.

Attendees include:

The purpose of these meetings is to:

• Share regional updates.

• Discuss organisational priorities.

• Identify opportunities for collaboration.

• Review performance and growth.

The success of each Regional Directors will be measured through:

• Local hub growth.

Together, the Founder, CEO, Regional Directors, Advisory Boards, volunteers, and local hub leaders will work to build a global community that creates meaningful opportunities for women across STEM disciplines while strengthening local connections and professional networks around the world.
