Dr Shara Cohen, PhD, CBiol, FWIF, FRCPath, FIBMS, FRSB, BEM
Founder & CEO, Women in STEM Network (WiSN)

Dr. Shara Cohen is an accomplished scientist, award-winning entrepreneur, and globally recognised advocate for women in STEM. With over 40 years of experience across scientific research, business leadership, and community-building, she has dedicated her career to breaking barriers and creating pathways for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Beginning her journey in academic research, Dr. Cohen published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in cancer research, immunology, and the life sciences. She later founded EuroSciCon in 2000, one of the first independent life science events companies, which she successfully scaled and exited in 2016. Her pioneering work in online and hybrid events demonstrated the power of accessible networking and knowledge-sharing to drive innovation and career growth.

In 2005, recognising the unique challenges faced by women balancing STEM careers and caregiving responsibilities, Dr. Cohen founded Mums in Science. What began as a modest support group grew organically into an international community of over 20,000 followers, offering resources, mentorship, and career guidance to women across all stages of their professional journey.

Building on this foundation, Dr. Cohen launched the Women in STEM Network (WiSN)—a global, inclusive platform designed to offer mentorship, skills development, peer support, and career opportunities. Through free CPD-accredited events, a STEM-focused recruitment hub, and dedicated networking spaces, WiSN is transforming how women in STEM connect, learn, and lead. It aims not only to address policy gaps but to empower grassroots, systemic change.

Dr. Cohen’s personal experiences—such as being the only girl in her A-level maths class and temporarily stepping back from academia to raise her family—inform her unwavering mission to make STEM careers more accessible and sustainable for women. She continues to advocate for equity, evidence-based solutions, and the advancement of meritocracy in science.

Alongside WiSN, Dr. Cohen is the founder of Cancer Care Parcel, a company supporting people affected by cancer through curated care packages and trusted resources. She is also the author of multiple guides for patients and families navigating serious illness.

In 2024, her lifelong dedication to supporting women and underserved communities was recognised with the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year’s Honours list.

Today, Dr. Cohen leads a growing international team and an expanding platform, united by a singular vision: to close the gender gap in STEM—not just through advocacy or policy—but by enabling every woman to thrive, wherever she is on her professional journey.

Rose Mutende – Biography

Dr. Rose Atieno Mutende is a passionate Science Teacher Educator, researcher, and advocate for inclusive STEM education. She currently serves as the Coordinator of the Centre of Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education (COSTEM) at Kibabii University, a public institution in rural Kenya. As a Founding Member of the Women in STEM Network, Dr. Mutende plays a vital role in building a global platform that supports, connects, and empowers women in STEM- especially those navigating challenges in rural under-resourced contexts and academia.
Dr. Mutende’s STEM journey began as a curious science student, navigating a path marked by both promise and adversity. Her passion for STEM led her to become a high school science teacher, where she nurtured the scientific curiosity of learners for 21 years. Her desire to make a broader impact saw her win a scholarship to study a MEd in Science Teacher Education at Aga Khan University, and later, a doctorate at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Currently, she is a STEM Teacher Educator at Kibabii University where she has taught since 2013. In this role, she shapes the next generation of STEM teachers, with a strong focus on integrating STEM Pedagogies and digital resources including simulations in Teacher Preparation programs.
Her commitment to equity and innovation is evident through her active involvement in global STEM education initiatives. Her demonstrated passion and dedication to improving the teaching and learning of STEM won her a two-year PhET Fellowship Program at the University of Colorado Boulder and later, LabXchange (Havard) making her a PhET Fellow and a LabXchange Ambassador. These achievements have helped her acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead transformative professional development programs on the use of interactive simulations and open educational platforms, making STEM subjects more accessible and engaging for teacher educators, teachers, and learners including those in rural under-resourced educational contexts.
Dr. Mutende is the visionary behind the Kibabii University STEM Club, which she founded to ignite student-led innovation, mentorship, and community outreach. Through this platform, she mentors preservice science teachers to establish and support STEM clubs in rural, under-resourced schools, thereby extending the university’s impact far beyond its physical boundaries.
Dr. Mutende seeks to inspire and motivate other women professionals particularly women in STEM industries and academia, who face systemic and contextual challenges. Having journeyed the diversity of career tracts in STEM education, from the classroom to institution of Higher Education, to international fellowships, she strongly affirms the value of persistence, mentorship, and community-led innovation. Her professional journey is a testament to the power of education to transform lives and communities. Through her work, Dr. Mutende hopes to foster a more inclusive, connected, and empowered community of Women in STEM, locally and globally.

Since 2006, Dr. Kalodimou has studied and working with stem cells from placenta, umbilical cord and adipose tissue, in every day practice and their applications in regenerative medicine, clinical trials, medical tourism and Flow Cytometry. Also, is working in the area of human genetics & population genetics, soluble vitamins and stem cells and their role in human health, stem cells organ 3D printing as well as cellular standards.
In addition to collaboration with state universities and pharmaceutical companies on research projects (19), Kalodimou frequently publishes (51 & 12 books) her findings. She has 2 patents.
Her biography was included in the Marquis Who is Who of the world for the years 2014, 2015 & 2018, Marquis Who is Who in America 2016, Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering 2017 & in May 2017 had received the ‘Who is Who’ (Marquis) 2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. She received the experienced “Shining Star” award, AABB PEP Program, 2017, the AABB PEP Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018, she is the AABB PEP International Ambassador, a TEDx Speaker & a Skill Mentor at EUvsVirus for 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic & in October 2020 she received the AABB President’s Award for her work in cellular therapy and as a mentor, (1st award that was given to a non-American recipient) and she received the Clinical Reviewer of the Year 2021 by Select Science: Scientists' Choice Awards 2021 and voted to receive the UEL Alumni Advisory Board Change Maker Award in 2021 & 2023, UEL Mentor of the year 2024, the winner of 50th Anniversary of Corning Cell Culture Essentials CELLebration 2024.

She is in the editorial board and a reviewer in several scientific international journals as well as board member in scientific organizing committee’s for medical conferences worldwide.

Silmara Furtado Da Silva – Biography

As a chemical engineer, I drive sustainable innovation through cutting-edge research, industry collaboration, and STEM education. Currently pursuing my PhD in Chemical Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), my research focuses on the catalytic conversion of bioethanol into olefins, combining process simulation, techno-economic analysis, and sustainability assessment to support low-carbon, circular technologies.

I hold a Master's degree in Technology of Chemical and Biochemical Processes from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where I specialized in developing and optimizing chemical processes. My experience includes contributing to three Petrobras R&D projects, where I:
🔹 Optimized diesel-biodiesel blends for fuel performance
🔹 Developed novel stability testing methodologies
🔹 Designed catalytic pathways for bioethanol-derived olefins using PID Eng & Tech tools

These experiences deepened my commitment to bridging academia and industry for practical climate solutions.

As an educator and mentor, I have a strong background in STEM engagement. From 2015–2020, I taught Chemistry in university entrance prep courses, promoting problem-solving and critical thinking. At UFRJ, I coordinated the Green Chemistry mentorship program, guiding undergraduates to propose sustainable process alternatives through industry-focused case studies. In 2023, I joined LatinHire as a STEM Education Program Specialist, tutoring Hispanic students from Chemical Engineering courses in U.S. universities.

Between 2018-2020, I contributed to the 'Catalyzing the Circular Economy' project, co-authoring 3 digital books, organizing events, and disseminating key concepts in circularity. As chair of the ACS UFRJ Student Chapter (2019–2024), I led outreach, research engagement, and global collaborations -expanding the chapter's reach and impact in Green Chemistry.

Currently, I'm actively involved in LatinX in AI, LatinXChem, Latinas in STEM, and LatinX in ChE, where I help promote diversity, representation, and professional development among Latin American researchers in science and engineering worldwide.

I've received 7 awards from the American Chemical Society for my contributions to Green Chemistry and outreach. With a deep passion for creating sustainable solutions, I'm committed to advancing chemical engineering for societal benefit.

Dr.shilu Mathew – Biography

Shilu Mathew is the first founding member of Women in Science. Raised in the Gulf countries, she was inspired by her professors to become a biological and bioinformatic scientist. Her mother was a significant influence, encouraging her to pursue a multidisciplinary research career. With 14 years of experience, she is a multidisciplinary researcher specializing in genomics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, microbiology, virology, nanotechnology, biostatistics, biobanking, and public health.
Her Bachelors was in biotechnology and she holds a dual Master’s degree one in medical nanotechnology and bioinformatics. After completing her collaborative PhD at Bharathidasan University, she continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow at Qatar University, where she worked on a project funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF). Following her postdoctoral tenure, she joined the Hamad Medical Corporation as a Research Associate in the ITRI department, where she expanded a project focused on CRISPR, microbes, and cancer.
Shilu is particularly passionate about advanced molecular biology technologies, including next-generation sequencing using SOLiD and Illumina platforms, Affymetrix and Agilent microarray technologies, Bioanalyzer, and the Sanger sequencer. She enjoys her extensive bioinformatics expertise covering protein modeling, molecular docking, molecular simulations, drug screening, next-generation sequencing using CLC Genomics Workbench and Geneious Prime, and expression analysis using tools such as Genespring and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis data analysis.
Shilu has authored 50 peer-reviewed articles in international journals and has given 16 conference presentations, particularly in BMC Genomics. Additionally, she serves as a reviewer for reputable journals such as Bioinformatics Insights and Computers in Biology and Medicine, and she is currently on the Editorial Board of The Open Bioinformatics journal published by Elsevier.
She is eager to work in a multidisciplinary field of science where computational research can be applied more broadly so it precisely approaches the wet lab work and provides a prompt solution to clinical research.
She is passionate about helping and being a shoulder to women and mothers in the STEM field. She holds the belief that a mother's kindness possesses the capacity to overcome any obstacle. She is the mother to a daughter.
