LGBT+ Inclusion in STEM: Education, Research and Networks

Inclusive STEM environments are shaped by more than public commitments. Workplace policies, management practices, professional networks and opportunities for progression all influence whether people feel able to contribute and develop throughout their careers.

This page brings together UK-focused research, educational resources and professional networks supporting LGBT+ people working and studying across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. A small number of international resources are included separately where they may also be useful.

It is a starting point rather than an exhaustive directory. Organisations and institutions should use these resources alongside direct engagement with their own staff, students and professional communities.

UK education, visibility and public history

  • UK LGBT+ History Month — Educational resources, events and public-history materials produced by Schools OUT UK.
  • Pride in STEM — A UK charity supporting LGBT+ people in STEM through public engagement, events, community projects and its annual LGBT+ STEM Day.
  • LGBTQ+ STEM — A UK initiative supporting queer and trans researchers through community-building, advocacy, professional visibility and the annual LGBTQ+ STEMinar.
  • Queer Britain — The UK’s national LGBTQ+ museum, preserving and sharing LGBTQ+ histories and experiences.
  • LGBTQ+ People in STEM — A National Museums Liverpool resource highlighting LGBTQ+ people and their contributions to STEM.

Research and evidence

UK professional networks

  • LGBT+ Physical Sciences Network — A professional community supported by the Institute of Physics for LGBT+ people working and studying in the physical sciences.
  • OUTbio UK — A network supporting LGBTQ+ professionals and allies across biotechnology and the life sciences.
  • InterEngineering — A network connecting and supporting LGBTQ+ engineers and allies.
  • Building Equality — An alliance of organisations and individuals working to improve LGBTQIA+ inclusion across the construction, engineering and built-environment sectors.
  • National Ambulance LGBT+ Network — A national network connecting and supporting LGBT+ staff across UK ambulance services.
  • GLADD — The Association of LGBTQ+ Doctors and Dentists, providing professional connection, advocacy and support across healthcare.
  • ALDER Network — The British Ecological Society’s network for LGBTQIA+ ecologists and allies.
  • LGBTQ+ STEM — A UK community for queer and trans researchers across STEM disciplines, with events, advocacy and opportunities for professional connection.

International resources

  • 500 Queer Scientists — An international visibility campaign featuring the experiences and work of LGBTQ+ people across STEM and related disciplines.
  • Out in Tech — An international community supporting LGBTQ+ people working across technology.
  • LWT — An international network supporting women, women of colour and non-binary leaders across technology, business and culture. Its remit is broader than LGBT+ inclusion but may be relevant to some members.

Using these resources

Individuals can use these links to find professional communities, events, research and examples of LGBT+ people working across STEM.

Employers and institutions can use the research to review workplace practices, staff networks, progression systems, data collection and management responsibilities. The existence of an inclusion policy does not necessarily show how people experience a workplace. What happens in recruitment, meetings, promotion decisions and everyday professional relationships may provide a clearer picture.

This list will be reviewed as new research, networks and resources emerge.
